Motivated By Hate

Campaign and publication designed to educate the people of Bristol on hate crime

publication & campaign design, posters & postcard designs

Motivated By Hate is an experimental typographic publication from an interview I had with Avon and Somerset police about hate crime. Following my publication I designed a campaign to raise awareness and educate the people of Bristol on hate crime with in their community. Hate crime currently is an important issue in our society as we are sadly seeing cases increase significantly since events such as Brexit and terrorist attacks.

Publication

The words of the publication are taken from an interview I had with Avon and Somerset Police. From the content I gained from the interview I created a bold thought provoking typographic publication which illustrates aspects of hate crime in Bristol, including what it is, how to report it, the process, what support there is for victims and what is currently being done to combat hate crime cases.

To create the aesthetic for the publication and campaign I selected impactful words and phrases from the interview which I then by hand cut out, creased, folded, scratched and manipulated to accentuate them. Each page was then scanned and recoloured to create the blue duotone effect linking to the Police. This followed the design style that I was trying to accomplish as wanted the publication to have a roughness linking back to the idea of flyer bombing and graffiti which is associated with some hate crime cases. I kept it solely a typographic publication as found the words from my interviews extremely powerful and effective.

Campaign

Following the interview publication, I created a campaign to help people know how to report cases of hate within Bristol, educate them more on the topic of hate crime and hate crime incidents and to emphasise that it is a serious offence. My publication and campaign educates the people of Bristol about hate crime within their own community. It also promotes us to talk about the subject of hate crime in more detail. This is especially important as the number of cases are rising.

Postcards

Along with my poster designs I decided to create a series of postcards with the same imagery as the posters on one side with the impact statements taken from the police interview. On the other side of the postcard there is more information on the back about hate crime in Bristol, the importance of reporting hate crime and how to report it.  I posted the postcards through the doors of houses in Bristol spreading the message of how we can combat and report hate crimes within Bristol.
