It’s 2019. Not 1919.

A newspaper exploring negative judgements which cross the line within our government

newspaper design

Bold and engaging typographic newspaper which explores judgements within our government which are crossing the line. These negative judgements are a form of hate and are not acceptable. We should not be opening the floodgates to this form of hate, we should be coming together and moving forward celebrating our diversity within our country, not heading back in time.

The newspapers aim is to open peoples minds that we should be moving forward as a country united, as one, improving important things in our country which need improving our education system, transport systems, the NHS, social services etc. We should not be using language like this and dividing our country. Therefore I decided to play on the idea that we are going backwards in time.

In 1919 there were race riots within our country. In the wake of the First World War and demobilisation, the surplus of labour led to dissatisfaction among Britain’s workers, in particular seamen. This was arguably the key factor that led to the outbreak of rioting between white and minority workers in Britain’s major seaports, from January to August 1919. Along with African, Afro-Caribbean, Chinese and Arab sailors, South Asians were targeted because of the highly competitive nature of the job market and the perception that these minorities were ‘stealing’ the jobs that should belong to white indigenous British workers.

During the months of racially motivated violence in 1919 there were violent attacks on minority workers, resulting in five fatalities, as well as vandalisation of their homes and properties. South Asians suffered somewhat less than black or Chinese workers as they were not regarded as such direct competition for jobs and housing; most remained within the navy and within their subsidised accommodation rather than seeking alternative employment and accommodation.

Do we really want to go back to this? If we continue to allow this sort of language within our own government and country it will soon be 1919 again and this is not ok.
